Lifeguards place at Central Texas Competition
On Friday, July 10, two lifeguard teams, the RR Rockin’ River Rats and RR Krebs Creek,
represented the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation at the Central Texas Lifeguard Competition at the UT Swim Center. Teams of lifeguards demonstrated their skills in the certain areas of First Aid, CPR and water rescue techniques.
There were five events for the teams to compete in at the Competition with 11 Central Texas lifeguard teams competing. The teams competed in all five events, scanning, First Aid/CPR, team rescue scenario, spinal backboard scenario and active victim rescue relay at the competition.
“We have our lifeguards participate in competitions because it is a motivator for them,” said Erica Molacek, Athletics/Aquatics Supervisor for Round Rock Parks and Recreation. “This competition gives the lifeguards a chance to prove the quality of their skills and it’s a lot of fun for them.”
The RR Rockin River Rats placed first in the scanning event, second in the backboard event and forth overall at the competition. The guards on the team are, Leah Anderson, Travis Luth, Ariel Maughan and Zach (Zorro) Rios.
The RR Krebs Creek team placed sixth overall at the competition. The lifeguards on the RR Krebs Creek team are, Luke Berhard, Amy Frame, Alex Herring and Shea Robinson.
“The competition was close,” said Molacek. “In some events our guards were only behind first place by two or three seconds, this shows that our lifeguards know what they are doing and represent Round Rock well.”
