The Austin-Round Rock metro area topped the Milken Institute Best Performing Cities Index, which ranks U.S. metropolitan areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. 

Index components include job, wage and salary and technology growth. Leaders in the 2009 index are the metros that succeeded in avoiding the worst of economic declines driven by falling housing markets and job losses in manufacturing and global trade.
