Stimulus-funded solar array generating power to City Hall
Project is one of five expected to save City $100,000 a year in electric costs

The Round Rock City Council and Solar Community cut the ribbon on the City’s new solar panel array on the top of the City Hall parking garage Tuesday, March 22. Mayor Alan McGraw and Jeff Wolfe of Solar Community spoke at the event.

You can access the monitoring system here.

The project is one of many in Texas and across the nation receiving U.S. Department of Energy Grants associated with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The City received $955,400 through the Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for the solar array and four other projects, as well as a $175,000 grant from Oncor for the new solar panel array, and a $48,000 grant from Oncor for HVAC system replacements. All five projects are expected to produce electricity savings of around $100,000 a year.

The City’s other EECBG projects are:

  • Replacing 165.5 tons of HVAC systems at eight locations, including the Public Library
  • Replacing light fixtures and adding occupancy sensors at 13 buildings
  • Replacing traditional computer servers with virtual servers
  • Working with an energy management services contractor to evaluate, monitor and improve energy usage at City facilities

Round Rock-based ESA, a Terracon Company, has served as the City’s consultant for the EECBG projects. ESA has provided professional Mechanical and Electrical engineering services and energy consulting services for more than 1,000 facilities around the country.

Solar Community is a Texas-based solar design and installation company with more than a Megawatt of installed solar capacity.
