 How Do I Get a Library Card
Print

To get a library card for the Round Rock Public Library, you can apply online or in person at the Library. Cards are free to Round Rock residents; non-residents must pay a fee.

Card Holder Policies
To remain a member in good standing you agree that you will abide by all library policies:

  • circulation, interlibrary loan, collection development, and computer usage policies;
  • furnish prompt notice of change of address, name, phone number, or email address;
  • furnish prompt notice of card loss;
  • pay all fines/penalties assessed against me or any others using my card with or without my permission;
  • reimburse the City the current market cost of a new item that has the same or similar title and binding, to replace all lost or damaged library materials; and
  • reimburse the City for costs, expenses, attorney's fees, and municipal court charges if legal procedures occur due to my non-compliance with any applicable ordinances, policies, and procedures.

Apply Online

  • After you have read all of the Card Holder Policies information above, go to the Library catalog and click on the “Register for a Library Account” button to apply. When you see the log-in screen, click on the "New User" button, on the bottom right.
  • Complete all required fields on the online form. Please make note of the PIN you chose.
  • Submit your registration by clicking on the “I accept” button.
  • You will be temporarily registered as a member of RRPL. Please make note of your temporary barcode number that is on your computer screen.
    • You will have access to the library's TexShare databases
    • You can place 1 request for a book to be held for you
      • Within 5 days of your online registration, you must complete your library registration by bringing to the library a document that verifies your current address
      • After you bring your document to the library to finish registering, you will receive your new library card and its full privileges

    Apply in-person at the library

    • Read all of the Card Holder Policies information above.
    • Bring one of these acceptable documents to any service desk to verify your address.
    • Once the above steps are completed, you will get a library card.

    Can minors apply for their own cards?

    • Parents or legal guardians must sign the application form for anyone 15 years of age or younger
    • People 16 to 18 years old may sign their own application form

    Do I have to show any documents to get a card?

    • Yes - you have to prove where you live. To do that, show us one of these documents:
      • Texas Driver's license or Texas ID card
      • a printed document that includes your name and current address, such as a bill or a lease.

    Why does the library care where I live?

    • People who live within the city limits of Round Rock:
      • pay property taxes, part of which helps support the library
      • pay no additional fee to get any kind of library card
    • People living outside the city limits of Round Rock:
      • have not paid taxes in support of the library
      • must pay an out-of-district fee for a library card

    What kinds of cards does the library have?

    • Round Rock Residents
      • Single card
        • allows for checkout of up to 15 items at one time, after the first 30 days
      • Family card
        • allows for chekout of up to 45 items at one time, after the first 30 days
      • TexShare card
        • TexShare is a statewide program that helps libraries and their patrons share resources.
        • Residents can get a TexShare card from RRPL 30 days after they receive their RRPL Card. Take your RRPL TexShare card to any other TexShare library, and you can register as a member of that library without paying out-of-district fees.
        • Each library makes rules about the services TexShare members can recieve from that library. Most libraries allow TexShare members to check out materials.
    • Non-residents

        • allows for checkout of up to 15 items at one time, after the first 30 days

      • Taking an RRPL TexShare card to other libraries
        • Non-residents who have purchased a RRPL card have access to the library's full range of services, including eligibility to get a TexShare card from Round Rock Public Library.
        • After 30 days as an RRPL member, Non-Resident card holders may request and receive an RRPL TexShare card to take to other TexShare libraries.
      • Joining RRPL with a TexShare card
        • TexShare is a statewide program that helps libraries and their patrons share resources.
        • Patrons who present a TexShare card from another library may register as a TexShare member of RRPL. Read our TexShare lending policies.

    Why do I have to wait 30 days to be able to check out more items?
    We restrict services for new members so that those members can show that they will return items and abide by library policies.

    For the first 30 days of membership, new single-card holders may check out up to 5 items, and new family-card holders may check out up to 15 items. Also unavailable during this 30-day probationary period are interlibrary loan and items marked "check out to permanent cardholders only."

    Once the 30 days pass, members who have shown their Texas Driver's license or Texas ID to the library become "regular" users and have access to all the services made available for their type of library card.
