Dan Santat graduated from the University of California, San Diego, in 1998 with a degree in microbiology. Almost immediately afterward he realized that he wanted to pursue a career in art and attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he graduated with honors in 2001.
Since then he has worked in various industries. Dan spent six years in the video game industry as an environmental artist for the blockbuster Spider-Man and Call of Duty series, he has done editorial work for Time, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Esquire, GQ, The New York Times, and many others. He even got to design the 2006 Macyâ€™s Day Parade Poster.
In 2006, Disney Channel premiered Danâ€™s original animated series, The Replacements, which ran for three seasons on Disney Channel and ABC. Books
Danâ€™s publishing debut came in 2004 with his first picture book, The Guild of Geniuses, by Arthur A. Levine Books.
Since then, Dan has gone on to illustrate many more books, including Otto Undercover by Rhea Perlman, Oh No! (Or How My Science Project Destroyed the World) by Mac Barnett, which won the 2007 Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators, and the New York Times Best Seller, Because Iâ€™m Your Dad by Ahmet Zappa, and the 2013 Texas 2 x 2 title Fire! Â¡Fuego! Brave bomberos by Susan Middleton Elya.
In 2011, Dan released his first graphic novel, Sidekicks, which won the 2013 Rhode Island State Book Award.
Dan lives in Los Angeles with his wife, two young boys, a dog, a cat, a bird, and a fish.
