The City of Round Rock adopted the 2012 International Fire Code Effective January 1, 2013. For information on Amendments to the Adopted Code click the link to Chapter 16 of the Round Rock Code of Ordinances.
The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for the following:
Every occupancy will have a life and fire safety inspection regularly. An engine company may also visit occupancy and conduct a pre-fire incident plan. A pre-fire incident plan is a means for an engine company to be familiar with a business and locate hazards that may complicate an emergency response to that location. Fire inspectors must review the following plans:
- Fire Alarm System
- Fire Sprinkler System/ Standpipe System
- Any unique fire system for special purpose or hazard
Site/Civil and Building Plans - General Submittal Requirements
Applicable Code: 2012 International Fire Code and other recognized standards and publications. Contact the City's Planning Department for submittal.
A. Address / Name of building or business
B. Key map showing location of site
C. Symbol / legend key and scale
D. Seal of registered professional engineer
E. North arrow
F. Dimensions of Vertical Clearance of all overhead obstructions (overhangs, canopies and the like). 13'6" minimum clearance.
G. Existing and proposed traffic patterns of driveways, and or proposed fire lanes identifying and labeling all physical barriers to vehicular access including but not limited to gates, bollards, landscaping and the alike. Must be able to reach all aspects of the building within 150 feet of the fire lane.
H. All driveway and/or fire lane dimensions, percent grades, turning radii and design specifications including load capacity.
- 20 feet unobstructed fire lane clearance.
- Dead-end fire access maximum of 150 feet.
- 25 feet inside turning radii and 50 feet outside turning radii.
- No grade breaks more than 7%.
- All weather-driving surface during and after construction.
I. Dimensions of all existing and proposed buildings, parking lots and vehicular use areas, landscape islands, peninsulas and medians, amenities, walls, fences, sidewalks, and any other land improvements. All roadways, driveways, overpasses, bridges, culverts and decorative/ pervious pavers, and grasscrete shall be labeled and identified with support loads clearly indicated.
J. Indicate all existing and proposed water mains and fire hydrants. Water mains should dual feed. Fire hydrant placement should be 300 feet in commercial and multi-family and 500 ft in residential. Riser room shall have access from the exterior of the building.
K. Location of all proposed and existing structures, landscaping, fire hydrants, (both private and public) shall be clearly identified.
- 3 feet clear space around the circumference of the hydrant.
- Hydrants must be within 100 feet of all FDC'S (Fire Dept. Connections)
L. Information for each structure on site shall include but not limited to:
- Proposed use
- Number of stories
- Construction Tyoe (I-V)
- Proposed height of structures
- Finished floor elevations
- Square footage of each story
- Total square footage
This list has been compiled for the review of civil, site and building plan reviews. This list is not intended to be the sole source of information. Each set of plans will be reviewed according to the uniqueness of each structure on a case-by-case basis. The Fire Prevention Division is not responsible for anything that may or may not be on any set of plans, and reserve the right to enforce life and fire safety codes upon site inspection after all reviews have been completed.
All occupancies must have all fire inspections prior to obtaining a certificate of occupancy. Supplement inspections and acceptance test must be completed and passed prior to the fire final.
Inspections that follow are required inspections, however, not limited to only these inspections. Other supplement inspections may be required in order to serve a special purpose or hazard.
1. Hydrostatic test on all piping including underground.
2. Visual on all piping including underground
3. Fire pump acceptance test
4. Flow test (usually same time as alarm test)
5. Main drain test
Fire Alarm Systems
1. Fire alarm acceptance test
2. Anything the fire alarm is responsible for, and or connected to, such as but not
limited to, elevators, kitchen hoods, fire pumps, etc.
3. Flow test (in conjunction with sprinkler contractor).
Acceptance test on any fire suppression hood system including, but not limited to, kitchens, paint booths etc.
Automatic Gate Openers
1. Must be 3M or compatible, OpticomT opener
2. Must have a manual override, Knox Box system
3. Must have an acceptance test
Fire Final inspections are conducted prior to any move in of people or stock in all occupancies. Must have Fire Final prior to application for a Certificate of Occupancy. A Fire Final consists of the following list, is not limited to this list.
1. Means of egress - exit signs, emergency lighting
2. Fire lane striping
3. Fire Extinguishers properly mounted and inspection tags in place
4. Fire caulking completed
5. Knox Box mounted and keys ready for installation
6. All applicable fire codes, local ordinances, Life Safety Code 101
Knox Box rapid entry system is designed to allow the fire department to gain access to occupancy without causing damage to the occupancy, during an emergency or a false alarm. The Round Rock Fire Prevention Division requires a Knox Box with current keys to business occupancies. Lists of requirements are as follows:
1. If the occupancy has a fire alarm or a sprinkler system
2. If the occupancy has 5000 sq ft or greater of floor space
3. If building has more than one tenant
4. If the fire official deems an extraordinary hazard
5. If the occupancy has a sprinkler system, Knox FDC caps are also required
