NEW: All of our programs that cost a fee will need a MINIMUM of 5 people to participant on a continual basis to continue the program.

Organizations 

AARP
The AARP local chapter business’ meeting is followed by a program. Members are kept informed of matters both local and national that are of concern to senior citizens. Social hour and refreshments follow. Visitors welcome.  AARP is dedicated to enhancing quality of life for all as we age. We lead positive  social change and deliver value to members through information, advocacy and service."  Membership in AARP is open to any person age 50 or above.  You must be a member of the National Chapter to be a member of the local chapter.
When: Second Wednesday of the month
Time: 1 pm - 3 pm
Fee: $5 a year plus membership in National AARP Organization

COMMUNITY GARDENING CLUB: This group meets to discuss local gardening tips. Also, don't forget about the city's free mulch program at the Brush Recycling Center while preparing your gardens for spring! The topic for August is "Orchids adn Bromeliads."
Days: First Monday of each month at 9:15 a.m.

DAFFODIL DOLLS
Fun, Food and Fellowship will be the order of our gatherings. On the 1st Wednesday we meet at the Baca Center for fun and fellowship. We also meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month for fabulous food and fellowship at all sorts of restaurants and cafes. We want to gather together to lift each other up, have fun and get to know one another. Our gatherings will be about taking care of ourselves, expanding our horizons and learning to enjoy life each day as we gracefully glide into our Golden Years.
If you want to be a part of a gathering of ladies that believe life is to be enjoyed and lived to the fullest with friends, then the Baca Center Daffodil Dolls just might be the group for you!  All that is required is an active Baca Membership and an attitude for fun! First time guests are free, after the 1st visit attendees are required to obtain a Baca Membership or pay a walk-in fee.

S.A.L.T. Senior & Law Enforcement Together
will no longer be meeting at the Baca Center. The organization will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month, however their new location will be at the Round Rock Police Dept., 2701 N. Mays.

SITE COUNCIL: An advisory board that provides advice and support concerning the operation of the Baca Center.  Open to the public.  Members encouraged to attend.

TRAVEL CLUB
This Club plans trips in and around the Central Texas area. The Club offers some overnight and extended trips!
When: First Wednesday of September, November and January.
Time:  1 pm
Fee: Club - None, Trips - various costs

WBCO SENIOR LUNCH ROOM
The WBCO Senior Lunch Room meets weekdays and provides a well-balanced, nutritious lunch for senior citizens.  Call 255-4970 to make reservations before 9:00 am. Reservations are preferred one day in advance.  $2 donation is accepted for persons ages 60 and up and $6 for persons under 60. Registration is now required for this WBCO program, so first-time guests will be asked to fill out paperwork. Call for more information.

EXERCISE

BACA CENTER WEIGHT ROOM: Come check out the most up-to-date equipment at the Baca Center Weight Room!  The weight room contains treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, machine weights, and free weights and is open during the Baca Center’s regular business hours.  Participants must be 21 years or older to be eligible for a Baca Weight Room Membership.

Times:  8:00 am – 7:15 pm Monday – Thursday,  8:00 am – 3:45 pm Friday and Saturday from 8 am - 11:45 am.

BACA CENTER WEIGHT ROOM ORIENTATIONS: Unsure about the weight room and how to work all the equipment in it?  This orientation will go through each individual machine at the Baca Center Weight Room and show participants how to use them.  The orientation is free to members.

BIGGEST LOSER PROGRAM FOR SENIORS:
Sessions include group workouts and advice on healthy eating. All fitness levels welcome.
Fee: $8/month for member, $13/month for non-members
When: Tuesdays 8:30-9:30 am for women, Thursdays 8:30-9:30 am for men, additional co-ed meetings on Tuesdays and Thursday from 4-5 p.m.

PERSONAL TRAINING: Available at the Baca Center.  Call Dawn at 512-218-5499

SENIOR CARDIO COMBO:
Tuesday and Thursdays

LINE DANCING: These classes are for both beginners and experienced dancers.  An instructor teaches the popular line dances of today. There is also line dance practice time on Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 11 am-1 pm which is free for members.

Fee:  $3.00 per class

SITTERCIZE: This workout is for individuals who need a less strenuous exercise class.  Participants do low-impact chair exercises with hand weights while working on increasing flexibility, endurance and strength. Free
Mondays - Thursdays 10:30 am - 11:30 am 

FUN DANCING:
Learn the basics of square dancing, line, contra and more fun dances in the Grand Meeting Room at the Baca Center. The program is open to the public and no experience or partner is necessary.
Cost: $30/13 week session.
When: Wednesdays, September 23 through December 15
Time: 7-9 pm

TAP DANCING: Learn to tap while getting a workout.
When:Thursdays
Time: 1-2:30 pm
Fee: $2 per class for members

TAI CHI: Exercise and meditation will improve balance, posture, strength and concentration at Baca Center.
When:  Fridays  
Time:  9:00 am beginners & 10:00 am experienced
Fee: $3 per class

Wii FIT:  This is a high tech, low impact physical activity for new system owners as well as for those who just want to try it out. Those interested in participating in the Wii training program or the Wii bowling tournament now being formed can sign up at the desk. Free. For information, call 218-5499.

Fun & Games

BACA SING-A-LONG
Come enjoy us for an afternoon of singing all kinds of oldies but goldies. (1930s, 1940's popular tunes). This is a new free program for members. Every Friday at 1 pm.

BINGO: Try your luck at the weekly bingo game.

BILLIARDS: The pool sharks gather each day from 8:30 am - 6:30 pm with no fee. Challenge Match Tuesday and Thursday 9 am - 1:30 pm  Free to members.

BRIDGE FOR FUN: This group plays for the love of the game.  Newcomers are always welcome. New players call 382-0379 for a reservation. Free to members.
Thursdays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm   

BUNCO: If you like BUNCO and like to have a good time, this is for you! Knowledge of the game is optional but having a good time is mandatory! Newcomers are always welcome, but please call the office to reserve a spot. Bring a finger food to share with the group. Fee will cover the cost of prizes.
First and Third Tuesday 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm 
Fee:  $3 each game night for members.

CANASTA CLUB: The Canasta Club gathers every Monday and Thursday to play.  New players are always welcome. Free for members.

CHICKEN FOOT: A fun game played with dominoes. It is easy to learn to play.  Free for members.
Wednesdays 10:00 am - 11:30 am  

CUISINE CRITICS: This group will go to local restuarants on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 11 am - 1 pm unless noted in our newsletter. The group will write a column about the restaurants for the Senior Moments Newsletter. Free to members.

DOMINOES: Beginner and experienced players are welcome.  "42" and "88" are played.  Free to members.

DUPLICATE BRIDGE: If you enjoy playing bridge in a relaxed and friendly environment, this is the group for you. New players call 388-0537 for a reservation. Free to members.

TUESDAY NIGHT DUPLICATE BRIDGE: If you enjoy playing bridge and can’t attend during the day, this is the group for you. New players call 388-0537 for a reservation. Free to members.

TEXAS CANASTA: Texas Canasta will gather every Tuesday to play.  New players are always welcome. Free to members.

MONTHLY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION:
Join the birthday celebration at the Baca Center for lunch and dessert on the last Wednesday of each month at 12:15 pm unless otherwise noted.

PINOCHLE:  Come play Tuesdays from 12:30 pm - 6 pm. Free to members.

POOL SHARKETTES: This is a GIRLS ONLY group that will learn how to shoot pool like a professional. No experience needed!! Mondays 9:30-11:30 am. Free to members.

PUB CLUB: This club will be the hit of Austin as we hang out at a different pub each month. Cover and meal are on your own. The fee is $6 per month for members.

Wii LOVE TO BOWL: This group will bowl on the new Wii system and hold future tournaments with other senior centers. No experience needed, can even do this while sitting. Meets the 4th Friday of each month from 8:30-10:00 am. Free for members.

CRAFTS CORNER: Group and individual projects are encouraged.  Supplies are provided. Registration is not necessary.  Members participate in craft shows and sales.
Tuesdays 10:00 am -2:00 pm  

BACA SENIOR ART CLUB: The club includes artists of all media such as oil, acrylic, pen and ink as well as watercolor.  New artists are welcome to attend. Free to members.
First and Third Fridays each month 1:00 pm 

TEJANO TIME: An informal dance get together on Thursday from 1 to 3 pm in the Baca Center Aerobics Room. Bring your own Tejano CD’s and join in or just watch. Free to center members.


Educational Classes and Seminars

COMPUTER HELP: Do you have computer-related problems? Our computer expert will be available to help. Call 218-5499 to make a reservation. Free help.  

Beginners: Tuesdays 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Intermediate: Thursdays 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm  

COMPUTER BASICS 101: A computer class to learn computer operation, email, internet surfing and more. Class is a six week session and reservations must be made by calling the Center. RSVP necessary to reserve computer space. RSVP required due to limited amount of computers available. There is also a FREE COMPUTER INSTRUCTION class offered at the library, call 512-218-7000 for information. Call 218-5499 for dates and times. Free.

VOLUNTEER BENEFIT COUNSELOR: Nancy Kind, is available from 9-11 am on the first Wednesday of each month at the Baca Center.  Nancy works with individual seniors to help them understand and apply for entitlements such as Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, supplemental insurance, prescription drug plans, Medicaid, and food stamps.

DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM: The program is held for those 50+. While this course does not meet the requirements for those with traffic violations, seniors who complete the course will qualify for a 10% discount for three years with most auto insurances. Monday, September 21 and November 16 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Baca Center.  The $12 fee covers instruction plus workbook and must be paid to AARP at the class. Register in person at the Baca Center or by calling 512-218-5499.

FINANCIAL BASICS: The meetings will be held every Wednesday at 9:30 am from August 27 through September 24 at the Baca Center. This is a beginner’s course designed to help anyone understand the financial world, starting with a historical perspective and building to today’s uncertain markets. The course is free with current membership. Register in person at the Baca Center or by calling 512-218-5499.

BOOK DISCUSSIONS: This group meets the second Tuesday of each month. Participants discuss short readings in fiction, drama, poetry and essays. The meeting is free to Center members. Visitors welcome. For information about the group and how to purchase the readings, call 218-5499.

SPANISH FOR FUN: Come practice your spanish with Pilar Weiss from Spain.  Class is informal and fun! Free to members, except for materials.
Thursdays 12:30 pm
Fee:  Cost of materials.

GUITAR LESSONS: Come learn how to play acoustic guitar with an experienced instructor. You will learn to read chord charts and tabulature. So begin your guitary-playing journey with us. Wednesdays, September 2-October 28, 2009, 9:30-11 am at the Baca Center. Cost: $10 for members.

JEWLERY MAKING CLASS:
Meets Saturdays from September 12 through October 3. Participants will make a necklace, earrings and a barcelet. For more information call 512-218-5499.
Cost: $10 for members. Cost of supplies will be determined at first meeting.
