Black History Month: Celebrating Garfield McConico
Round Rock honors its first African American city councilman
Date: 2/6/2010
Location: Allen R. Baca Center
301 W. Bagdad Ave., Building 2, Round Rock, Texas (Map)
Cost: Free

"Symbol of Black Economic Success: Garfield McConico, First African American Round Rock City Councilman”  is the local theme of Black History Month 2010 -- part of a nationwide celebration marking the annual observance, in February, of the past achievements and contributions made by African Americans.

The City of Round Rock and community will celebrate the theme with a series of events, including the Grand Celebration at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Baca Center, commemorating the late Garfield McConico. The event features keynote speaker Wilbur E. McConico and entertainment and refreshments.

After the celebration, please stop by the Old Hopewell School for a “meet and greet” with the alumni.  There will also be a free concert presented by MDK & JAM Productions at Sweet Home Baptist Church at 3:30 p.m.

For more information, please contact Michelle Cervantes.
