Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with Round Rock's 26th Annual MLK Commemorative Walk & Celebration from 1 to 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19.
The Black History Organization, with strong participation from the Round Rock Independent School District and support from the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department, is presenting the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration.
The celebration includes a commemorative walk followed by a program at the Allen R Baca Center for Community Activities located at 301 W Bagdad in Round Rock.
The commemorative walk begins at CD Fulkes Middle School at 300 West Anderson Avenue.
Parade participants and marchers, led by a drumline or marching band from Round Rock ISD, will assemble at 1 p.m., and begin the march promptly at 1:30 p.m. The march will last approximately 15 minutes and will end at the Baca Center.
The Round Rock High School ROTC Color Guard will lead the parade.
The march will also include a drive for food donations. Round Rock Nissan is providing a Titan pick up truck to collect non-perishable food donations. The donations will be taken to the Round Rock Serving Center. The Black History Committee asks those in attendance to fill the Titan.
A program with speakers and entertainment will be held at the Baca Center beginning at 2 p.m. The program will include performances by students the CD Fulkes Middle School Choir. Local artists including Tyler McLaughlin and Michael Stevens will also perform.
The emcees will be Round Rock City Councilman Carlos Salinas, and Pastor Bernard Buhl of the One Way Baptist Church in Round Rock.
The Guest Speaker will be Dr. Dwight Watson, History Professor, at Texas State University in San Marcos. He will speak about the history of the civil rights movement. The Speaker of the Occasion will be Pastor Anthony Mays, of the Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Austin, and a prominent member of the community.
A reception will follow immediately after the program at approximately 3:15 p.m.
The public is invited to participate by attending the walk, bringing non-perishable food for donation, bringing banners, and attending the program.
Attendance is free of charge and all are welcome.
