The Tapestry Committee, with support from the City of Round Rock, will host the 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Holiday Celebration on Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 1 pm to 3 pm.
The event will celebrate diversity and recognize Martin Luther King’s accomplishments and the civil rights movement. The celebration begins with a commemorative march from Round Rock’s Buck Egger Park, at the corner of Mays and Logan, and concludes with a program at the Allen R Baca Center for Senior and Community Activities.
The crowd will assemble at 1 pm at Buck Egger Park and march at 1:30 pm. Participants will march to a marching band from Round Rock ISD heading north across the Mays Street bridge to the Allen R Baca Center, 301 West Bagdad.
A program with speakers and entertainment will be held at the Baca Center beginning at 2 pm. The program will include performances by a several performers from Round Rock High Schools including the Round Rock High School Show Choir, Stony Point High School Jazz Ensemble and the “all star” marching band from four high schools, two gospel choirs and include a recording of the “I have a Dream” speech.
Reverend Warren Madison of St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church, will discuss events from the civil rights era and their effects then and now. A reception will follow immediately after the program at approximately 3:30 pm.
The public is invited to participate by attending the march, bringing banners and attending the program. Attendance is free of charge and all are welcome.
