The Tapestry Committee, with support from the City of Round Rock, will host the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Holiday Celebration on Saturday, January 17, 2009 from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Allen R Baca Center.
The event will celebrate diversity and recognize Martin Luther King’s accomplishments and the civil rights movement. The celebration begins with a commemorative march which concludes with a program at the Allen R Baca Center for Senior and Community Activities.
The crowd will assemble at 1 pm at C.D. Fulkes Middle School at 300 W. Anderson Avenue in Round Rock. The march will proceed east on Anderson, south on Mays, west on Round Rock Avenue, and south on Brown Street and end at the Allen R. Baca Center at 301 W. Bagdad Ave. Participants are asked to assemble at 1 pm, march at 1:30 pm, and attend a program at the Baca Center at 2 pm.
March participants are asked to bring posters and signs of support for King's message and memory. In memory of his strong message of community, event organizers ask that all those attending bring along canned goods as contributions to a food drive being conducted by the Round Rock ISD Service-Learning Program benefiting the Round Rock Area Serving Center.
Entertainment at the Baca Center will include choirs and a jazz band from Round Rock ISD, an inspiring student essay, and a dramatic mime presentation from a local church in Round Rock. Speakers include Pastor Calvin Hooper of the Household of Faith Church in Round Rock and Pastor Charles Shaw of the Lakeview Holiness Church of Hutto.
The public is invited to participate by attending the march and the program. Attendance is free of charge and all are welcome.
