On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the City of Round Rock, in coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), will conduct a project information Open House to discuss a proposed project in Round Rock, Texas.
The Open House will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the meeting room of the Wingate Hotel at 1209 N. Interstate Highway (IH) 35, Round Rock, TX 78664.
During the Open House, staff members will be available to answer questions from the public. No formal presentation will be given; thus, those wishing to attend may do so at their convenience anytime during the Open House hours.
About the project
The proposed project would include the reconstruction of IH 35 entrance and exit ramps between Farm-to-Market Road (FM) 3406 and United States Highway (US) 79. The northbound entrance ramp north of US 79 would be replaced with an exit ramp and the northbound exit ramp south of FM 3406 would be replaced with an entrance ramp. The southbound entrance ramp south of FM 3406 would be removed entirely. The southbound exit ramp north of US 79 would be replaced with an entrance ramp.
The project would also include the construction of auxiliary lanes between the proposed exit and entrance ramps on both the northbound and southbound frontage roads. Construction on the IH 35 mainlanes is proposed to tie the reconstructed ramps into the mainlane pavement and to reconfigure the signing, striping, and illumination as necessary.
The purpose of the proposed project is to enhance mobility and improve safety. The proposed ramp reversals would reduce congestion at the US 79 and FM 3406 intersections by allowing northbound travelers to access the mainlanes before the FM 3406 intersection. Likewise, southbound travelers accessing the mainlanes would be able to forego the intersection at US 79.
The proposed project would also move the exit ramps further back from the intersections to allow more room for traffic waiting at the intersections. The need for this project is related to the growth of Round Rock and nearby cities as well as congestion issues at the US 79 and FM 3406 intersections. The proposed project would not require any additional right-of-way and would not result in relocations or displacements.
Construction of the proposed project would involve temporary lane closures and traffic detours, but only during non-peak period traffic periods.
