As a part of a nationwide Map Modernization program, FEMA has modernized its Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) and Flood Insurance Studies (FIS) for Williamson County and Travis County. The current FEMA maps became effective September 26, 2008. These maps may periodically be revised through the FEMA revision process.
Within the City of Round Rock, the new FEMA maps did not reflect any new detailed (Zone AE) studies. All streams within the City limits where re-delineations of effective floodplain boundaries on the updated two (2) foot contour data and showed little change in the floodplain boundaries. However, the maps now show some areas of the City where properties are now in the floodplain that were previously shown to be outside of the floodplain, specifically in approximate (Zone A) studied areas.
Floods of greater magnitude than that associated with the base (1% annual chance) flood elevation (BFE) are possible. Therefore, the City recommends that you seriously consider purchasing flood insurance even if it is not required by your lender, especially if your property is located near a major waterway. Since the City is a participating community in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), anyone in the community is eligible to purchase flood insurance.
