Round Rock the Boat Regatta
May 17, 2008
Old Settlers Park was full of spectators waiting to see who
would float, sink or swim at the first annual Round Rock the Boat Regatta. Contestants made boats out of cardboard and tape and relied on their inventions to keep them afloat as they traveled across the lake at Old Settlers Park. Sixteen boats of all sizes and shapes were launched into the lake to set sail.
Participants ranged in age from 8 to adult with lifesize boats of various designs. From pirate ships to yellow bumble bee, the boats and their captains jumped in.
Participants arrived at 9 am to get their boats ready for
launch. Each participant boat that didn't sink competed in two time trial races and then the finals.
Contestants competed for oar trophies and bragging rights. Eager to cross the finish line, several participants swam in with their former boats in tow.
The Round Rock the Boat Regatta will return in Spring of 2009. The City of Round Rock will provide boat building school and documents on how to build a cardboard boat to help participants learn how to construct a cardboard boat that will actually float. Contestants are encouraged to also use online resources. River Legacy cardboard boat regatta boat building video.
