Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 29th Annual Commemorative Walk, Celebration

The celebration includes a commemorative walk followed by a program at the Allen R. Baca Center for Community Activities

On Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 1:00 to 3:15pm, the Black History Organization, with participation from the Round Rock Independent School District and support from the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department is presenting the 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration. mlk

The celebration includes a commemorative walk followed by a program at the Allen R Baca Center for Community Activities located at 301 W Bagdad in Round Rock. The walk depends on the weather.

The commemorative walk begins at CD Fulkes Middle School at 300 West Anderson Avenue. Parade participants and marchers, led by a drumline from Round Rock ISD, will assemble at 1 p.m., and begin the march promptly at 1:30 p.m. The march will last approximately 15 minutes and will end at the Baca Center.

A program with speakers and entertainment will be held at the Baca Center beginning at 2 p.m. The program will include performances by students the C.D. Fulkes Middle School Choir. The Round Rock Black History Organization Gospel Choir, using the combined talent of at least three local churches, will be featured.  The emcees will be Pamela Cotton of The Voice and One Way Baptist Church, and Pastor Chuck Freeman of the Free Souls Church of Round Rock.

The Guest Speaker will be John James of Round Rock, who is a former community organizer, and works for Prudential Insurance Company in Austin. The Speaker of the Occasion will be Tanjour Bowman of the Black Parents of Round Rock.

A reception will follow immediately after the program at approximately 3:15 p.m.

The public is invited to participate by attending the walk, bringing non-perishable food for donation, bringing banners, and attending the program.  Attendance is free of charge and all are welcome. Corporate supporters include Round Rock Nissan, Wag A Bag, Henna Chevrolet, and 3M Company.  Non-corporate supporters include St. Paul A.M.E., Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, One Way Baptist Church, Sweet Home Baptist Church, Bahai’ Faith of Round Rock, Faith 4 Life, Texas State University, and Round Rock Public Library.

The choir for the Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church will perform.  Also, the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church Choir of Round Rock under the direction of Sister D.D. Wright, will be featured.  The emcees will be Former Round Rock City Councilman Carlos Salinas, and Reverend Stuart Shelby of St. Richards Episcopal Church in Round Rock.

The Guest Speaker will be Ms. Cherry Steinwender of Houston, member of the Center for The Healing of Racism.  The Speaker of the Occasion will be Pastor John A. Mitchell, of Pecan Street Church, in Rockdale Texas.
