The Round Rock Police Department is now accepting applications for 2014’s first Citizens Police Academy. It’s a 10-week course that gives students a behind the scenes look at what officers do every day. Every Tuesday night from 7 to 10 p.m. citizens will meet officers from every division, like Animal Control, K9, Training and Recruiting, Dispatch, SWAT, Hostage Negotiations, Crime Scene, Evidence, Patrol functions, School Resource Program, Criminal Investigations and more.
The CPA is also a hands on course where participants are allowed to drive a police car in an obstacle course, go to our range and shoot firearms, and also use our Laser Shot simulator with virtual targetry. Riding out with patrol officers is an option as well.
Our Community Affairs Officer Joseph Claypool will once again put on the Academy. We will conclude our class with a graduation and dinner.
Class size is limited to about 25 students. Deadline to submit applications is Sept. 1.
The requirements to attend the class are:
- Someone who fits within the parameters of the goals, values, and mission of the Round Rock Police Department
- Clear driver’s license
- Completion of background check for involvement with the police
