The City of Round Rock has launched a creative new video series, Budget Hot Takes, designed to make the City’s proposed budget more accessible and engaging for residents. Modeled after the popular hot wings challenge interview format, the series features City leaders discussing serious budget priorities while eating wings that get progressively spicier.
The goal is simple: promote transparency around how Round Rock invests taxpayer dollars and connect residents to the decisions that shape their community.
“This is one of the most important conversations we have each year, and it touches our daily lives through the roads we drive, the parks we visit, how safe we feel, and what it really means to live in Round Rock,” said Communications and Marketing Director Sara Bustilloz. “By presenting the information in an approachable way, we’re inviting the community to engage with the budget process while still providing a clear, serious look at the investments we’re making.”
The proposed $789.7 million budget covers core services and long-term community investments, including:
- Public Safety – 10 new police officer positions, six new firefighter positions, and investment in technology and training.
- Public Works – Roadway construction, water supply and reuse projects, drainage improvements, and recycling center upgrades.
- Parks and Recreation – Major expansions at Old Settlers Park, Play for All, and the City’s trail system, along with facility improvements.
- Capital Investments – More than $418 million in the Community Investment Program, supporting roads, infrastructure, parks, and facilities.
Through Budget Hot Takes, each department leader walks through their piece of the budget, explaining how these investments serve residents now and prepare the City for future growth. While the hot sauce adds humor and pressure, the conversations remain focused on public priorities — from maintaining safe neighborhoods and reliable infrastructure to ensuring access to green spaces and recreation.
The Budget Hot Takes series reflects Round Rock’s ongoing commitment to transparency, innovation and public engagement. Residents can watch the full series on the City’s website at www.roundrocktexas.gov/hottakes.
