Round Rock Fire Department responded to a construction-related gas leak Wednesday afternoon near Creek Bend Boulevard and Camino Del Verdes Place. Fire crews checked gas levels in the area and evacuated seven nearby homes as a precaution.
Atmos Energy is on scene and is building a bypass to isolate the damaged section of gas line and restore service. Traffic closures remain in place on Creek Bend Boulevard north of Old Settlers Boulevard while crews continue working; motorists in the area are advised to find an alternate route using Plantation Drive.
Weather conditions — cloud cover, high humidity and almost no wind — are keeping gas from dispersing quickly, so Round Rock Fire Department Hazmat crews and Atmos Energy have expanded air monitoring in the area and continue to monitor.
To reduce the risk of static electricity or sparks near the leak while gas levels are elevated, Oncor has temporarily turned off electricity in nearby neighborhoods to keep the area safe while repairs are made. Currently, 280 customers are expected to be impacted for up to two hours (restoration by 6 p.m.). Up to date information on power outages can be found at stormcenter.oncor.com, texting OUT to 66267 or by calling 888-313-4747.
Because the damaged gas line is part of a closed-loop system, Atmos crews are digging in multiple locations to isolate the leak and redirect gas flow. Electricity can be safely restored once the gas system is stabilized. Any additional evacuations would be made proactively in person to any potentially impacted homes if conditions change.
