Sgt. Hutchinson’s death caused by self-inflicted gunshot wound

During an Aug. 12 press conference, Williamson County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Bill Gravell announced Sgt. Craig Hutchinson’s cause of death was a gunshot wound through the hand into the head. The manner of death is suicide.

Hutchinson was found dead behind his home in Round Rock West in the early morning hours of Monday, July 25. He had returned home from working a shift with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, when he radioed there were prowlers in his back yard. Round Rock Police and several other agencies worked the investigation to determine the details leading up to the death of Sgt. Hutchinson.

RRPD Chief Allen Banks announced Aug. 3 that analysis of the bullet recovered at the scene indicated it came from Sgt. Hutchinson’s weapon. Banks said the death was being investigated as a possible homicide or self-inflicted.
