At 1:50 p.m. Saturday, July 20, the Round Rock Fire Department received a call about an ammonia leak at Michael Angelo’s, a frozen food manufacturer, 200 Michael Angelo Way.

The RRFD and Williamson County hazardous material teams responded, and encountered a large tank leaking ammonia into a containment area. Ammonia vapor was also releasing into the environment. Approximately 20 employees of the facility were safely evacuated. As a precaution, residents nearby and downwind of the facility were told to shelter in place and turn off their air conditioning units. Roads leading into the facility location, as well as the neighboring residential area, were also closed for a time.

There are no injuries. The ammonia leaked is estimated at 3,000 gallons. Ammonia is used as a refrigerant in the company’s manufacturing process.

Austin Fire Department haz-mat teams assisted during the process of neutralizing the ammonia.

The shelter in place request was lifted at approximately 6:55 p.m. and most nearby roads were open by 8 p.m.
