The Round Rock Police Department is warning the public about a phone scam hitting the area.

RRPD received several calls from concerned residents advising they received telephone calls from someone representing themselves as a Microsoft employee, telling residents something is wrong with their computers and their personal information is needed to fix the problems. The scammers appear to be getting names and numbers out of the phone book and are targeting names that many of the elderly have.

Round Rock police started getting the calls Friday, Dec. 13, but do not believe anyone has been victimized up to this point.

How to avoid fraud

Never give out your personal information or financial account numbers to unknown persons over the phone, or in response to unsolicited e-mails or unsolicited offers received through the mail or overnight delivery companies. Round Rock police has a special unit devoted to this type of crime.
