Southbound IH-35 reopened following law enforcement investigation

Round Rock Police BadgeSouthbound IH-35 between Old Settlers Boulevard and Sam Bass Road was reopened Wednesday afternoon following a law enforcement investigation in the 1700 block of North IH-35.

At a news conference held at approximately 5 a.m., Austin Interim Police Chief Brian Manley reported that Austin Police Department located the vehicle of the suspect involved with several recent bombing incidents across the Austin area at a hotel in Round Rock overnight. After APD arrived at the location, Manley said the suspect drove away and stopped in a ditch along the 1700 block of North IH-35. As members of the APD SWAT team approached the vehicle, the suspect detonated a bomb inside the vehicle and was found deceased. One APD officer suffered minor injuries from the blast and no other injuries were reported.

Manley reminded the public, including Austin’s neighboring cities, to continue to keep an eye out for suspicious activity and objects.

“We don’t know where this suspect has spent his last 24 hours, and therefore we still need to remain vigilant to ensure that no other packages or devices have been left throughout the community,” he said.

RRPD advises that individuals who see anything that seems suspicious or out of place should continue to call 9-1-1.
