The City of Round Rock recently approved engineering services for a new traffic signal located east of State Highway 130 in a growing area of the city’s northeast corridor. 

City Council on July 10 unanimously approved an engineering contract with HDR Engineering to design a signalized intersection at Chandler Road and Ed Schmidt Boulevard.  

The $247,335 contract covers a new traffic signal, drainage modifications and the addition of right-turn lanes on eastbound Chandler Road and on northbound Ed Schmidt Boulevard. A left-turn lane on westbound Chandler Road currently exists at that location.  

The nearest traffic signals are about a half-mile west at the state Highway 130 intersection, and about a mile east at the FM 1660 intersection.   

Round Rock Public Works Executive Director Michael Thane said a traffic study, along with an evaluation of traffic patterns and previous incidents, determined that the intersection meets the criteria for a traffic signal. 

Design work on the project is expected to be completed in early 2026. Construction would begin shortly afterwards.
