Man drowns in Brushy Creek after attempting to rescue 4-year-old daughter

A man drowned in Brushy Creek on Sunday, May 17, after being pulled underwater below a dam after getting his 4-year-old daughter out of harm’s way.

The incident occurred at 4:41 p.m. just upstream from the City’s namesake, west of Chisholm Trail.

According to witnesses, the girl had walked out onto the dam and became scared of the rushing water. Her father, Jorge Martinez Sr., 38, of Austin, walked onto the dam to get her and both of them went over the dam. As they fell, the father threw the girl far enough toward the bank that she was able to paddle away from the undercurrent. The father was pulled underwater below the dam, and remained there for approximately 5 minutes. His body floated to the shore, where his pregnant wife began CPR.

Round Rock Firefighters and Williamson County EMS Paramedics responding to the scene took over resuscitation efforts. Martinez was pronounced dead at approximately 5:22 p.m.
