Community members gathered Monday at Lakeview Stage in Old Settlers Park for the Round Rock Memorial Day ceremony.
The annual “Remember and Honor” event brought residents together for reflection, remembrance and gratitude. Hosted by the Round Rock Veterans Coalition and the City of Round Rock, the ceremony honored U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country.
During the program, Mayor Craig Morgan welcomed guests and recognized several community partners. Those included City Council members, the Round Rock Veterans Coalition, Round Rock Parks and Recreation, families of the fallen, Gold Star mothers, elected officials and event partners.
Mayor Pro Tem Kristin Stevens helped guide the ceremony and introduced several honors. Councilmember Melissa Fleming introduced guest speakers retired Staff Sgt. Jay Fondren and retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Steve Ruh. Ruh serves as chief of community outreach and engagement for Army Transformation and Training Command.
Chaplain Amanda Williams gave the invocation and benediction. In addition, Master Gunnery Sgt. Ismael Castillo led the Missing Man Table ceremony with Stony Point High School JROTC. He later read the symbolism of the Battle Cross.
Music and ceremonial honors were central to the event. The Stony Point High School Ensemble Choir performed “A Tribute to the Armed Services” and “God Bless America.” Michaela Watson performed the national anthem, Stephen Wilkinson performed “Amazing Grace,” and the Falcon Flight Formation Team conducted a flyover.
Stony Point High School JROTC presented the colors, assisted with the wreath ceremony, performed the 21-gun salute and played “Taps.” The ceremony took place from 10 a.m. to noon at Old Settlers Park, 1501 Harrell Parkway.
