Traffic stop near IKEA prompts precautionary closure of I-35

Just after midnight, officers with the Round Rock Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 3300 block of northbound I-35 near IKEA.

As officers approached the vehicle, they observed what appeared to be explosive-like materials inside. Out of an abundance of caution, both northbound and southbound lanes of I-35 were temporarily shut down while specialized units responded to assess the scene.

The driver was safely detained and later determined to be experiencing a mental health crisis. Upon further investigation, the materials in the vehicle were confirmed not to be explosive.

The Round Rock Police Department would like to thank the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Round Rock Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Austin Police Department’s Bomb Squad for their assistance.

The investigation remains ongoing.
