Tween Book Club (ages 9-12) (preregistration)

The Round Rock Library Public Library will host a tween book club on Thursday, April 8, 2021, at 4:30 pm. Tweens are invited to meet virtually and discuss the novel “Alone in the Woods” by Rebecca Behrens.

Books will be available for library pick-up for all registered attendees. If registration is full and you are interested in joining the event, please contact Amy German amygerman@roundrocktexas.gov.

Please Note:

While book club selections are chosen specifically for tweens, parents may still wish to review the content for appropriateness for his/her child. For more information, please contact the children’s reference desk at 512.218.3275.

Write On! Short Story Contest (ages 8-12)

The Round Rock Public Library is accepting entries to the Write On! Tween Short Story Contest. Young authors, ages 8-12, may submit an original short story. The contest will be open from Thursday, April 1, 2021, to Friday, April 30, 2021, at 5:00 pm.

Writing contest prizes:

  • The writers of the top three stories will receive a Barnes and Noble gift card: 1st place $30, 2nd place $20, and 3rd place $10.
  • All short story entries will be turned into a book that will become part of the Round Rock Public Library’s local author collection for children.

Contest guidelines:

  • Writers may enter one original short story.
  • The story must be a maximum of 2000 words or 5 pages double-spaced. There is no required minimum word count or story length. Please do not send pictures or graphics with your story.  We are not able to include them in the book. 
  • Writers must be ages 8-12.
  • Previously published stories will not be accepted.
  • Entries (both digital and mailed) must be received before 5:00 pm on Thursday, April 30, 2021.
  • Entries must include the writer’s name, parent or guardian’s name, age, e-mail address, phone number, and the story title.
  • Entries submitted that do not meet the contest guidelines will be disqualified. 

How to enter the contest: 

  • Read the contest guidelines. 
  • Write your story!
  • The Teen Advisory Board will vote on the top three stories. Winners will be announced on Friday, May 21, 2021.
  • Digital Submission: Save your story in a Word document or in a plain text file.  Attach the file and email it to: Amy German at amygerman@roundrocktexas.gov.
  • Mail-in Submission: All mailed in stories will be the property of the library and not returned.  Please mail a copy if you would like to keep the original story.  Mail the submission to: Round Rock Public Library, Attention: Amy German, 216 E. Main Street, Round Rock, Texas, 78664.

Scratch Programming with Fun 2 Learn Code

The Round Rock Public Library and Fun 2 Learn Code will host virtual Scratch computer programming classes for kids ages 8-12. Participants will learn to code using Scratch, a visual programming language for kids designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Virtual LEGO® Robotics (ages 8-12)(preregistration)

Join us online to build and explore with LEGO® WeDo robotic kits. Participants will build a Hungry Alligator, an alligator robot that opens and closes its mouth.

Registered participants will check out a robotics kit with their library card. You will build the spinning robot at home and use LEGO drag and drop coding to make the robot move. We will meet virtually on Monday, March 15, 2021, at 4:30 pm to answer questions and show off your robotic creations.

Please Note:

  • Online preregistration is required. Registration starts Monday, February 22, 2021, at 9 am.
  • This event is for ages 8-12 only. Registration is limited to 6 participants.
  • Only one kit may be checked out per household.
  • Participants must possess a free library card. The robotics kit will be checked out to you upon pick-up.
  • Robotics kits will be checked out for 10 days only. The kits must be returned to the Children’s Reference Desk. There will be no renewals or extensions.
  • Kits will be available for pick-up at the Children’s Reference Desk starting Tuesday, March 9, 2021.
