City of Round Rock honored by Texas Historical Commission

The Texas Historical Commission on Thursday presented the City of Round Rock with its Award of Excellence in Media Achievement, honoring excellence in reporting by print or electronic media on preservation and/or heritage tourism issues.

While a wide array of one-time media products are generated by the City, this nomination highlights media products that generate long-lasting results and that were produced during the past two years:

Historic Landmarks Explorer 
The newly designed Round Rock “Historic Landmarks Explorer” is an interactive online application that allows the public to explore and learn about 109 historic resources and landmarks throughout the City of Round Rock. The application provides an interactive map, photos, addresses and a detailed description of each landmark. The map identifies locations of landmarks, historic districts, historic markers, cemeteries and former sites of Round Rock historic resources to help the public navigate the site.

Historic Downtown Walking Guide
The newly designed pocket-size “Historic Downtown Walking Guide” marries the vibrant nature of modern-day Downtown Round Rock with its deeply rooted history. The guide leads visitors and residents through 1.7 miles of the historic heart of Downtown Round Rock and highlights 41 significant Texas historic landmarks. These guides are available at events, the welcome center and the library.

Places in Time Videos
“Places in Time Videos” included a variety of historic resource topics (Places in Time: The Stagecoach InnPlaces in Time: Woodbine Mansion, Places in Time: The Immortal Ten Bridge, Places in Time: Round Rock Public Library, Places in Time: Palm Valley, and Places in Time: St Paul AME). These videos are available online, and are scheduled for viewing periodically on the city’s Government Access TV Channels (Spectrum Cable 10  and Uverse 99) to share information about historic resources.

City of Round Rock social media accounts: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter
The Facebook account, which has more than 106,000 followers, is where the city posts historic photos and information about Round Rock’s historic resources. It also provides a way for the public to provide comments to the city, which helps the city capture the public’s thoughts and experiences related to the historic resource. City Facebook posts covered numerous several historic resource topics: (Facebook – Wagon wheel ruts along Brushy Creek. Facebook – Palm House RelocationFacebook – Main Street (1896), Facebook – Post Office staff (1905), Facebook – Chisholm Trail Road (1907) and Facebook – Mays Street (1880).
