While construction rolls underway on one section of the wide-ranging Gattis School Road transportation project, another segment is now substantially complete.
Work on Gattis School Road Segment 3 has come to the end of the road, about a half-year earlier than originally expected. Only landscaping and clean-up remain as the City of Round Rock has reached substantial completion on Segment 3, among several transportation projects underway to reduce congestion and improve connectivity.
Segment 3 included widening of the formerly four-lane road to a six-lane major divided arterial, pedestrian improvements, bicycle enhancements and right- and left-turn bays at A.W. Grimes Boulevard and Double Creek Drive, with new traffic signals. Median improvements to improve traffic flow and enhance safety included a raised center median and median openings at Southcreek Drive and Joyce Lane.
Gattis School Road Segment 6, encompassing the area between Via Sonoma Trail and Red Bud Lane, remains under construction after beginning in early February. Construction on the approximately $23 million project began on Feb. 2, with completion slated for late 2027.
Segment 6 includes the transformation of the roadway from four lanes to a six-lane divided arterial. Improvements include raised medians, intersection improvements, turn lanes, traffic elements and pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The project also includes improvements along Red Bud Lane at Gattis School Road.
Looking ahead, segments 2, 4 and 5 – each smaller than Segment 6 – are currently under design. Segment 2 stretches from Lawnmont Drive to Windy Park Drive, Segment 4 is from Doublecreek Drive to Meister Lane and Segment 5 encompasses the area between Via Sonoma Trail west to Rusk Road.
Gattis School Road Segment 1 – from South Mays Street to Lawnmont – was the first project completed.
