CARDS & GAMES

CARDS

BRIDGE: The Baca Center offers several types of bridge games for all abilities. Our first President, George Washington enjoyed bridge and also wagering on the game. Stop by the Baca Center to play various types of bridge including duplicate, neighborhood, evening and bridge for fun. All groups get the opportunity to learn or improve their bridge playing skills.

CANASTA: The Baca Center offers three different types of Canasta for your card-playing enjoyment. Canasta is a rummy-like card game that can usually be learned in a couple of sessions. Participants can learn the game or improve upon their skills.

CRIBBAGE: This card game can be played with 2-4 players and utilizes a cribbage board that is used for scorekeeping. It has several distinctive features: the cribbage board and a separate hand counting for the dealer. It has been characterized as “Britain’s national card game” and the only one legally playable on licensed premises without requiring local authority permission. This program is open to those wishing to learn the game or those wishing to improve their skills.

HEARTS: Participants and their partner will want to get as few points as possible in this game. Hearts is structured to be played with four players and is not difficult to learn. Like other fun trick-taking card games the rules of the game are not complicated. Even though the rules are simple there is a righteous range of scientific sport in this “evasion type” card game.

PINOCHLE: Participants can improve their concentration skills while playing Pinochle in teams of 4. The game is a trick-taking game and partners want to be the first to score 500 points.

SPADES: Participants playing spades learn to estimate the strength of the cards in their hand for bidding. Partners bid on how many tricks they can take to win the game. This game is easy to learn and all skill levels are welcome.

GAMES

AMERICAN CHINESE MAH JONG: This game can help improve your cognitive skills as well as offer socialization. Game sets of 166 Chinese tiles are used and the game will stimulate your mind. Previous knowledge of the game required or stop by to watch how it is played and learn from others.

BINGO: Bingo players acquire points with each bingo and can then cash-in those points for home products, grocery items or specialty items. Participants can choose up to 4 bingo cards for play and cost $2 for members and $3 for non-members.

BUNCO: This is a fun fast-paced dice game that anyone can learn and a game that is not about skill but what the dice want to offer each player. Participants can easily learn this game of chance and have a wonderful opportunity to socialize.

DOMINOES: The Baca Center offers various opportunities to play games of dominoes, including 42 and Mexican train. Participants can come to learn, improve their skills or just to socialize.

HONG KONG MAH JONG: Come play Mahjong with us! This is the Hong Kong version. Different than the American version. Don’t know it? Don’t worry, we’ll teach you!

OPEN GAME PLAY: Like to play various games but don’t have someone to play with? Meet up with others looking to play games. The Baca Center has chess, checkers, cards, scrabble, cribbage, rummikub, and many more fun games in the Music Room. Games are not permitted to be taken out of the Music Room.

FITNESS & WELLNESS

9 SQUARE IN THE AIR: 9 Square is a sitting or standing version of volleyball and 4 square. The game is easy to learn and can be played competitively or just for fun. The object is to get to the middle square and stay there as long as you can. Players can be eliminated for not returning the ball to another player’s square, hitting the ball outside the structure, or double hitting the ball. Currently, play is standing and non-competitive to get everyone familiar with the game.

CHAIR YOGA: This weekly class is perfect for people who may have difficulty getting to the floor and back up in a regular yoga class. The chair provides support and stability, allowing the student to experience a yoga class where poses are easily accessible. A chair yoga practice will benefit students in many of the same ways as a mat practice, improving flexibility, strength, circulation, range of motion, balance, posture, breathing and a calming of the mind. This class is beginner friendly and suitable for people with limitations. Class ends with a 5-10 minute guided meditation.

GRANNY BASKETBALL®: This program is a gentle game for women of a certain age (50+). Team uniforms resemble the original girls’ basketball uniforms in the 1920s. The ladies play 1920s style, six-on-six Granny Basketball. The group will play four other Texas teams and may perform in public at local high school or college games. The team consists of 12+ players, 2 coaches and 3 referees. All training and strategies are provided with an emphasis on NO RUNNING OR JUMPING in the game. Weekly practices will be held at Clay Madsen Recreation Center and games with the other Texas teams will be in Georgetown or Harker Heights.

GROUP EXERCISE: The Baca Center values health, exercise, and an active lifestyle for everyone at every age. We provide a variety of group exercise classes through the day that are included in your weight room membership fees. Non-members must pay the visitor pass rate of $3/class.
