Reading out loud can be challenging to some readers. For a motivating change of pace, treat your reader to a 10-minute session reading to a therapy dog.
Bow Wow, a partnership between the Round Rock Public Library and the Austin Dog Alliance, is open to children from preschool through 8th grade.
Regular schedule:
10:30 – 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Saturdays of each month
Please check our calendar for details and this month’s schedule.
How it works:
- Reading slots are 10 minutes long.
- Online preregistration is required. See the online calendar to register.
- Bow Wow reading dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owners/handlers as a team.
Appropriate behavior around our therapy dogs:
(parents, please review these guidelines with your children)
- Stay calm and quiet around the dog.
- Always ask for permission before petting the dog.
- Be kind to the therapy dog. Do not pull its tail or ears. Do not put your face in the dog’s face, or lay on the dog.
- Only one child reads to the dog at a time. Your reading group should include only the dog’s handler, the therapy dog, the child reader, and the parent/caregiver. This arrangement makes for a much more enjoyable reading experience for the child.

Building up our community–a new focus for new times
Well done, friends–you earned more than a million points, and unlocked donations from Friends of Round Rock Public Library to two local service organizations: the Round Rock Area Serving Center and the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter.
Thanks for flexing so well while we worked to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community. You did something new, and you did something really good for our community! And a special thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the way.

2020 Summer Reading Sponsors
Thanks to our sponsors for helping us build a community of readers!
As we respond to the economic fallout of the COVID19 pandemic, we are especially mindful of the organizations who have long supported Round Rock’s readers.
We thank the sponsors who have stepped this year, and for many years in the past.
- Friends of the Rock Public Library has made this program possible, and is funding the donations we’ll be making to the Round Rock Area Serving Center and the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter. In sort of a reverse-sponsorship, Friends is also purchasing gift cards from some of the local businesses who have been long-time sponsors of the Summer Reading Program. These gift cards will be used as drawing prizes.
The Friends functions as sort of a booster club for the library, extending the library’s impact on the community. We are so grateful for the extraordinary ways they have stepped up this very unusual year.
- Huntington Learning Center will match the Friends of the Rock Public Library donation to the Round Rock Area Serving Center if we reach our community goal of reading.
- Pedernales Electric Cooperative has provided some offline activities for kids, which the library will distribute as possible.
- Sweet Eats Fruit Farm has provided some passes for children, which the library will distribute as possible.
- Fun 2 Learn Code provides free computer program classes for kids during summer and throughout the school year.
- Texas author P.J. Hoover is providing a free virtual book club for tweens and teens.
- Students from Texas State University Round Rock’s Teacher Education program will host a fun-filled virtual afternoon of math and literacy.
We are leaving our 2019 sponsors visible as an extended thank you. Many of them expressed a willingness to continue supporting the library this summer, but because of the pandemic and the resulting loss of volunteers and in-person gatherings, we could not accommodate their generosity. We are grateful to them for supporting reading in Round Rock!
