About the General Plan 2010-2020 

Round Rock is currently transitioning from a successful suburb into a prosperous and attractive midsize city. This transition presents major changes in Round Rock’s quality of life and business environment, from the ways people move about the city to the number and types of places where people can do business or have fun.

A summary of each chapter’s recommendations for policy guidance is posted here. Several chapters address issues that were not part of earlier general plans, such as community quality, sustainability, support for older neighborhoods, historic preservation, and redevelopment quality. These are issues that the City Council has identified in the Strategic Plan as critical to maintaining Round Rock as a city of choice, and which residents expressed concerns about in the General Plan Community Phone Survey and last summer’s workshops and focus groups.

The General Plan is revised approximately every ten years to reflect the host of new conditions and challenges facing the city.  This Plan is the official policy document guiding the city’s physical growth and development, and directly impacts what kind of place Round Rock will become over the next decade.  The General Plan addresses a variety of issues shaping the city, ranging from historic preservation to transportation to the environment.

Public Input

Workshops
Through May, June and July 2009 we held a series of focus group workshops to discuss the range of topics to be addressed in the General Plan, including quality of life, neighborhood preservation, transportation, water & wastewater, land use, historic preservation and subdivision design.  We collected participants' suggestions and at the last meeting had participants rate them in terms of how important or helpful they would be.  Progress of the workshops is summarized on the General Plan 2020 blog.  Results of the focus groups and ratings are below:

Survey
Public input is an important part in this revision process.  In late 2008, the Planning Department hired Raymond Turko & Associates to conduct a statistically representative survey of Round Rock residents’ planning–related concerns and priorities.

The survey included questions about the availability of retail and services, the city’s appearance, neighborhood quality and design, support for historic preservation, and improving downtown Round Rock.  Please refer to the survey results summary and executive summary for more detailed information.  Full results (huge file) are available from the Planning Department.
